Doesn't speak English... a real mind bender...
Contractors who expose YOU to liability to increase their profit... they pick up cheap "off the street day laborers" as needed to do their jobs - illegal, inexperienced, uninsured and off the books / paid in cash daily - if one of these guys is injured on YOUR job YOU can be held liable and you will be...
Leaves a big mess... for you to clean up...
Won't return your calls after you write the check... red flag but a little late...
An "out of state" contractor with CT phone... flim flam...
A "subcontractor"... the job is written up by one guy or company then someone else shows up to do the job - when the problems start they blame each other and you wind up the loser...
Says a definitive written work order isn't necessary... maybe not for them but by all means for you - everyone should be on the same page going in - the days of the handshake are as extinct as the dodo bird...
Questionable characters with access to your home... this one speaks for itself...
Presentation / demeanor / ability... your best judgement call on this - does he know what he's talking about - you might be surprised as to how many don't (especially "salesmen")...
A "franchise", "dealership" or "chain" operation... investment for owner - the main selling point to peddle these operations is "it's a one size fits all business" and "you don't have to know anything about construction"... you pay for "big buck commission salesmen" - in the home improvement business (used car type) salesmen will more often that not gild the lily, make promises that will not be in writing, use scare tactics (your walls are ready to collapse), make special deals (just for you???) and use every hard sell tatic in the book to get you to "sign up on the spot"... you pay for a second string "staff" - they have fancy titles of this or that like administrators, managers, vp's, reps, assistants, directors or co-ordinators - if you haven't dealt with this crowd yet you're in for a real treat - expect a lot of waltzing around here if you have any problems... you contribute to a national advertising program - you help pay for a big phone book ad in Wyoming... you pay for kickbacks - a percentage of your job $$$ in kickbacks for royalties / commissions - up to 20% of the gross and you pay top dollar for the cheapest people they can drum up, as needed, to actually do the work...
Contractor referral services... these slick willy web sites give "professional referrals to the consumer at no charge" - how and why would they do that??? - they charge contractors a fee to be recommended - they wouldn't know these contractors if they tripped over them, have no idea as to their competency and quite frankly they don't care - the extent of their "checking out" or "screening" contractors is to get their names from a phonebook and be sure their "signup check" or "lead purchasing checks" don't bounce - they are not making any money off the consumer and are not liable for their referral in any way - get past the FREE part and read their disclaimers and fine print carefully - good deal for THEM...
Unlicensed contractor... many claim to be licensed that are not - some will go as far as to give you a bogus license number - you can check their status yourself by going to the CT. Dept. of Consumer Protection website @ http://www.CT-Clic.com - DO NOT TAKE THEIR WORD FOR IT - if they are not listed on that site they are not licensed regardless of what they may tell you or how they advertise themselves - some even charge you sales tax, which they pocket, even though they do not have a use sales tax reg. number issued by the CT Dept. of Revenue Services / very illegal - if they do present a contractors license make sure that it is current and in the same name as the company or person you are doing business with and making the check out to - these guys give the entire construction profession an unwarranted black eye - should you run into this situation you should contact both the CT Dept. of Consumer Protection and the CT. Dept. of Revenue Services - they are there for the consumers protection and indirectly every legitimate contractor...
"Salesman" or "Tradesman" ???... salesmen will say or promise whatever it takes to get the order and their commission - "overselling" and "unrealistic claims and promises" are not uncommon in the "home improvement business" - we do not use salesmen with boiler room backgrounds - those dollars stay in your pocket - our tradesmen, who will do your estimate and will themselves be on the job doing the work hands on, are more realistic, honest and knowledgeable and will give you both the pro's and con's up front...
Hustlers who talk more about their "easy finance plans" than the work to be done... be wary of these wind bags or you may find yourself on the outside looking in - unfortunately there are lots of tank room 2nd mortgage pusher types connected with the home improvement business - more interested in the (no recourse) note than the job - some "lenders" even pay them a "commission" to write their notes - we suggest if you require financing you go to a bank, but not their bank...
